Skyrim Mods
Jan. 10th, 2012 11:40 pm So, today was a full day of ethics lectures. Very heavy going. And to make it a perfect week, we are having a day of child protection lectures on Thursday. >_<; It's like they have compiled all the hardest, heaviest subjects together deliberately, to weed out the faint hearted...
Luckily, I have a day off tomorrow. I will be sitting at home, waiting for my shiny new washing machine to arrive. ^__^.
In Other News:
In order to take my mind of things and give my brain a chance to recover from the lectures, I decided to bite the bullet and check out some Skyrim mods. I am deliberately avoiding any nude mods, mainly because I tend to leave a lot of dead, naked necromancers everywhere and I don't like the idea of wandering along roads and seeing them lying around with their wangs and wobbly bits out. XD I'm glad to see there are some good male nude mods for this game, but even so....
Anyway, I have picked out a selection of high def mods that basically re-skin the game to look better on PC. I have a very good PC and it can handle a lot, but even so I have noticed a slight reduction in the smoothness as I move from one area to another which just goes to show how much data this game is processing as you wander about. Also, I have been very impressed- the upgraded skins are subtle, but definitely look better. Everything looks a little bit sharper and clearer, but other than that, they change nothing- which is good, because I rather like the less-than-beautiful faces that some of the races and NPCs have, and I don't want to make a whole new game- just enhance the one I have. ^__^.
A full list of what I have installed is as follows:
-HD reskin mod for the whole game (WIP). While currently incomplete, this mod is constantly being updated to change textures from standard to HD. It currently covers trees, rocks, areas of ground, houses, some weapons and armour, some foods (including my beloved cabbages), the sky, and various other odds and ends. I will be downloading the various updates for it as they become available.
-Smoother faces and lips mod. This one is really subtle, but probably my favourite- the original faces and lips often had little square distortions and shadows (especially around the chin and brow) caused by the compression of the original skins and textures. Similarly, the lip shading was often a bit blocky and didn't always line up with the underlying lip shape. This mod smooths that to make the colour look more natural and fit better on the lips. This mod updates them, so that the faces are still the same, but without the distortion. It makes a HUGE difference, but without taking away any of the character and style of the current faces and races.
-HD eyes. Another subtle one, but very effective up close. Also makes my main character (who has red eyes) look like a demon, which is hilarious.
-More realistic ice mod, that makes the giant ice flows and cliffs look more impressive.
-More realistic water. Possibly the only one I am least impressed by, although it is still better than the unmodded water. I may change it if I find a better one.
-HD horse skins.
-HD plant and foliage update, which is *very* impressive- especially when you look at the plants up close.
-HD bugs and insects- subtle, but makes them look nicer when you get up close (if you can- some of those little bastards are fast as hell!) It also has some options for changing the colours of the default butterflies, but I have kept mine the same because I rather like the orange and blue.
-HD more realistic blood spatters- a good improvement, but sometimes it covers my screen so much I find it hard to see what I am hacking to bits.
-First person horse riding. Makes controlling Donkerhorse SO much easier! XD
The only slight problem is that the screenshots the game saves are lower resolution than the actual game, so it's hard to show off the changes. -__-; But hey- here's a few to try and show you what I have done....
Weather you can tell that the grass and butterfly are higher res or not, that is definitely first person horse riding. ^__-.
