misguidance: (thoughtful)
 So, tomorrow I'm back to work.  I'm not feeling quite 100%, but I haven't had any vomiting (or anything similar) since Friday, so I am good to go.  And truthfully, I am itching to get back to it.  Even though I have been laid up in bed most of the time, I feel as if I have been outstandingly lazy. >_<;

Tomorrow I am back out in Community with my community midwife mentor, whom I adore.  I can't wait to see her again- she's a saint. ^__^.

In Other News:
I tried out 'Star Trek: Online' over the weekend.  It was a.... mixed experience, I suppose. >_>;

Now, I have always been a huge Star Trek fan.  I am very much of the Next Generation era, and grew up watching it.  I like the original series, too, and also Voyager.  The only one I was less keen on was Deep Space Nine, but then we all have our favourites, don't we? ^__-.   Anyway, I actually didn't know there was a Star Trek MMO around (I don't tend to keep up with the general fanbase), so when it popped up on Steam as a free to play game, I thought I would give it a go.  I was encouraged to see that it was made by the same people who made City of Heroes (which I loved, back in the day...), so I thought it would check it out.

There are two very obvious problems with this game, which are apparent right from the start:  the first is the graphics, which appear to be very good textures over woefully lacking models for people, and a weird mix of flat backgrounds behind 3D space craft for the rest.  The animations are also very clunky and don't look very natural at all, and the hair is generally atrocious- it looks like they have barely updated it from City of Heroes!   The second problem is that it is, without a doubt, the most unstable online game I have ever played.  In the 5 hours of gameplay I had with it, I was disconnected from the server about once every 8-15mins, which made it very hard to actually play the damn game.  It was a huge disappointment.

It has a lot of good points, though, which can't be overlooked: game play is split between standard 'running about and killing stuff' MMO play and space, where you fly your own ship (which you get to name) and shoot at stuff.  The ships move as if they are swimming through treacle, but the ability to divert power to shields and things makes it quite good fun.  You can also customise your character a fair amount (though the face customisation is limited- better than Warcraft, but not nearly as good as Rift), and for the non-human races (of which there is a ton) you get all kinds of fun things like nose details, ears, sticky-out bits, and bony plates.  You can also make your own alien species to play as, which is awesome- I created Guide, just for fun!   You also get to make your own 'away team', which are also fully customisable as the game progresses.  This means that everyone playing will end up with their own unique bridge crew who follows them about, with their own skills and tricks to help you out.  This is quite unlike any other MMO I have played, and is something I would really like to mess about with more.... if only the game didn't keep kicking me off so much!

Overall, it's hard to say what I feel about it.  I love some of it, and hate other bits.  But hey- it's free, so it's not like I have lost anything by downloading it, and I am hoping to get some more out of it once the issue with server stability is fixed.  You know, provided they *do* fix it.  >_>;
