Feb. 20th, 2013 04:27 pm Today I accidentally shot anaesthetic lubricating gel across the ceiling of an operating theatre, and one of the nurses had to get on a step-ladder to clean it off again so it wouldn't drip on the surgeon while she was operating. The scrub-nurse (who is also my hospital mentor) was laughing so hard that the anaesthetist got worried that she was going to pass out, and made her go and sit down for a bit.
The woman and her birth partner also found it pretty funny, which is good. I would hate to spoil her experience just because I am a klutz who cannot operate a syringe.
(If you're wondering, the gel is used while placing an in-dwelling catheter. There was a bubble in the pre-packed sterile syringe, though, and the nurse instructing me told me to 'gently pop it out' before using it. Little did I know that those things go off like shot-guns when you press the plunger....)
To be honest, though, today didn't actually feel like work. >_> My lovely hospital mentor is training to be a back-up scrub-nurse, so I had her to chat to, and the two normal scrub-nurses have rather taken to me, and had me running around doing jobs for them between chats. I have felt really, really welcomed by the theatre team- it's a completely different vibe to working on labour ward. I'm actually going to miss it when I go back onto normal placements. -___-; I may have to find excuses to do extra days there, just to say hello now and then!
It was also really nice to see my hospital mentor again. She's a lot like me in many ways, including having difficulty slimming and a serious depression problem, but we also share a sense of humour and we always have a good laugh. I spent so much time chatting to her that the day flew by, and before I knew it I was being sent home again. XD
Really looking forward to tomorrow. I get to shadow the anaesthetist. :D
